Google 09.05.2004 Test Reports By Date:

May 29th, 2004

There has been a very interesting development in the test results of 09.05.2004.  The results have been changed and they are now listed differently.

The new sorted list of the test results in the Google search shows that the H1 tag is now rated higher than the H2 tag.
The bold tag is now rated lower than the H1 tag, just under the H2 tag.
The results are now "divided" up in to two different main search results in the Google search.

Here is a chart of the new results as they appear in Google as of May 29th, 2004:

NOTE: Yes. we have noticed that the seo-google-test-results.html page is now included in the results - we have omitted it from our table as it wasn't part of the original test.  For a further discussion on this topic, please click here or see the heading 'SEO-GOOGLE-TEST-RESULTS.HTML WAS INCLUDED THIS TIME IN THE RESULTS' found on this page , below the questions and answers section.

Second main search results (found on third page of Google search results):

      META   Text Decoration Headers

This is very interesting and poses a couple questions if you have been following along and paying attention:

QUESTIONS

Why has Google now divided these results into separate result headings?
Why all of a sudden has Google sorted the results again differently from the previous results on May 9th, 2004?
Are the results going to change again?

SUGGESTED ANSWERS

Why has Google now divided these results into separate result headings?

There is really no clear answer.  However, if you examine the tables, you will see that the second main search results have no extra text decoration, keyword headers, or keywords in the title.  It's obvious to suggest that Google may find these pages to be "too simple" or "boring" and may rate them differently as their counterparts.  I'm going to leave this question to be answered by people in the forums.  If you have any suggestions, please email us at feedback@edsolutions.ca and we'll be happy to post your suggestion on this report for others to see.

Why all of a sudden has Google sorted the results again differently from the previous results on May 9th, 2004?

We feel that Google's freshbot originally found the test pages on May 9th, 2004, and indexed them without giving each one their special and proper rating.  After May 29th, 2004, the real Googlebot came back and re-indexed the pages, this time giving them their proper weights and ratings.  We have seen this happen with forum posts when the freshbot finds it for the first time.  The forum posts appear very high in the SERPs for a couple weeks until they are revisited and re-indexed again.

However, if you're been following along, you'll see that the first two results were "as expected" and parallel between the two tests.  Both the title keyword test page and the filename (URL) test page were ranked #1 and #2 respectfully.  This poses a further questions:  Does Google's freshbot only sort the first two pages of a domain correctly?  Does Google's freshbot give a higher initial ranking to title and URL pages?  Only future tests and time will tell us what the real answer is.

Are the results going to change again?

Only time will tell, but we're thinking 'no' unless Google changes its algorithm.

SEO-GOOGLE-TEST-RESULTS.HTML WAS INCLUDED THIS TIME IN THE RESULTS

We have noticed that the seo-google-test-results.html page is now included in the results - we have omitted it from our table as it wasn't part of the original test.  Also - If you attempt to look for the links and keywords on this page now, you will not find them as we have just restructured the pages as of April 29th, 2004 for better organization.  We have also removed the links in the tables.

Now, lets comment on how this may have skewed results as of April 29th, 2004:

We are aware that the page 'seo-google-test-results.html' is now delegating back links to the test pages.  But since all of the test pages have been granted only one contributing back link from the page, it shouldn't skew the results.

There is one that causes a problem; the page ranked in the #2 slot is "fishingwithbeerbottlez-germanboyforthfiver-treesrmadefromsteel.html".  Why is this a problem? Because the link on seo-google-test-results.html has created not only a backlink, but a keyword anchor with the searchable keywords as the anchor.  This may skew the results for that one page, but since it is still in the same spot where we would of guessed, we're not too worried about this at this point.  This little "problem with our test results" may tell us one thing:  That the page tp6.html with its keywords in the title is rated much stronger than the keywords in the filename coupled with a fully active keyword anchor back link.  Looks like our little problem has shown how powerful title keywords can be.  Not even the keywords in the file name plus a keyword anchor can beat it.

The results are very interesting as of May 9th, 2004.  Here is what they tell us.

      META   Text Decoration Headers
Ranking  Filename Content Keywords Desc Title Bold Italics underline h1 h2 URL
Ranked #1 tp6.html
Ranked #2 fishingwithbeerbottlez-germanboyfortyfiver-treesrmadefromsteel.html
Ranked #3 tp7.html
Ranked #4 tp9.html
Ranked #5 tp8.html
Ranked #6 tp11.html
Ranked #7 tp10.html
Ranked #8

tp2.html

Ranked #9 tp4.html
Ranked #10 tp3.html

From these rankings we can conclude (for now) that keywords contained in the title tag are the most important to Google.  Keywords contained in the URL are second most important to Google's ranking system.  Please note that these keywords are not in the domain, but rather in the file name only.  We weren't about to register a domain named "fishingwithbeerbottlez-germanboyforthfiver-treesrmadefromstreel," heh.

More interesting, we note that the H2 tag is the third most important to Google, and it ranks it higher than the bold and H1 tags!  Keywords in the bold tag seem to be most important after the H2 tag, followed by the H1 tag.  This is really quiet interesting, and it may tell us that Google has done this to deter spammers who think that the H1 tag is more important than all the tags that can be put into a HTML page, sneaky!

Following closely and ranked #6 in our little experiment is the underline tag <u>, which comes in just before the italics tag <i>.  As you can see they rank higher than tp2.html, however this may be because tp2.html does not have as many keywords as the underline and italics pages.  And the most interesting of all, is that tp4.html and tp3.html are ranked last, they contain the keywords in the content and in the meta tags (description and keywords.)  Something to ask ourselves is, if Google penalized these pages due to the fact that they contain ONLY the keywords in the meta tags.  100% keyword density in the meta tags may mean major penalties.

A future test will be set up immediately and the results will be posted on this page as they become available.  Make sure you check in at a later time.
